Entomology

Namibia boasts an impressive 487 indigenous species of Insects of which four butterfly species have been named after Steve Braine the owner of The Naturalist Collection.

The entomological trips in Namibia are best taken in the summer during the rainy periods when most insects are actively visible. Here we will concentrate on the Lepidoptera - Butterflies and Moths, as well as Coleoptera - various Beetle species.

While many of the insects in the Namib Desert are dependent on the rainfall there are several endemic species which can be found throughout the year such as the Fog-Basking Beetle (Onymacris unguicularis), Trench-Digging Beetle (Lepidochora discoidalis) and several other Tenebrionids.
