The protection of animal species and the environment is ingrained in the constitution of Namibia. Because of this Namibia is often referred to as Africa’s greatest conservation success. Where elsewhere numbers of vulnerable and endangered species such as Elephant, Cheetah, Wild Dog, Black and White Rhinos are on the decrease, Namibia boasts a healthy and steady population.
Namibia’s ocean is rich in plankton and as a result, supports an array of marine wildlife.
Moving away from the coastal shores, our deserts are alive with various desert-adapted species such as Springbok, Gemsbok, Ostriches and even desert-adapted Elephant.
The Kunene region in the far northwest of Namibia, is home to the world’s largest numbers of free-roaming Black Rhino. Desert-adapted Lions can be found in the area between the Kunene River and the lower Kuiseb River.
Namibia also boasts the highest number of Cheetah population. Some of these can be found in the world-famous Etosha National Park along with White Rhino, Hyena, Leopard, Warthog and the endemic Black-faced Impala. Other antelope species that can be seen here include Greater Kudu, Giraffe and Eland.
Animals such as Buffalo, Wild Dog, Roan and Sable Antelope can be found in the Caprivi Strip in the Bwabwata and Mahango National Park.
