What’s living under the sand-dunes in Namibia? Join this Desert Day Tour to find out.
An experience that is not to be missed. While staying in Swakopmund, be sure to book this half-day tour that takes place along the eastern part of the major dune belt, located between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund.
‘Little 5’ or ‘Living Desert Tour’ are other names for this tour, but we call it the ‘Eco Dune Tour’ because we pride ourselves on tracking and teaching our guests about the desert-adapted creatures, without interrupting their delicate ecosystem.
You have a big chance of witnessing the following in their natural habitat: Namib Sand Diving Lizard, Web-footed Gecko, Namaqua Chameleon, Peringuey’s Adder (Sidewinder), Namib Sand Snake, Black Hairy Thick-tailed Scorpion, Fog Basking Darkling Beetle, and several other insects only found along the dune belt.
Interesting desert-survival adaptations of these animals will be pointed out to you, and you will be given excellent photographic opportunities.
We will also educate you about history in the area such as the ‘The Horse Graveyard’. Here, the mass slaughter of South African military horses marked the turning point of Namibia’s (then Southwest Africa) involvement in the First World War. This area, holding some 1,600 carcasses, signifies the key role that Swakopmund and Walvis Bay played in the development of Namibia.
A brief description of the minerals found in the dunes is also explained, as well as the formation of the dunes and the importance of the coastal fog to all the living organisms and vegetation found along the dunes. The only birds that may be encountered here are Tractrac Chat, Red-capped Lark, Gray’s Lark, Rock Kestrel and Rufous-eared Warbler.
